Healthy Indian Cuisine

There is obviously a reason why Indian cuisine has become so popular in the UK. Whether it is due to the array of different flavours, the spice palette or simply because it is different to what we are used to, whatever the reason it is one of the most popular cuisines in the UK to date. Chicken Tikka Masala has been jokingly named our national dish. Indian takeaway is the most popular in our country, being ordered by thousands on a Saturday night for a quiet night in. Those who are put off by Indian cuisine are usually those counting the calories. However, Indian food, just like any English food isnt always unhealthy.

Curries are the most popular dish associated with Indian cuisine. If you take out any excess oil you have already made your perfect dish healthier. Roasted spices are a great addition to any curry and can be the perfect substitute to the oil you have taken out. They add a lot of flavour making the curry more enjoyable. If you have a strong spice palette you are in luck. Red chillies have amazing health benefits and one of the main ingredients in spicy curries such as Vindaloo. Traditionally, Indian curries are made with vegetables rather than meat, fish or poultry. This is due to both economical and religious factors. Following this tradition, you could make the curry even healthier by padding it out with vegetables such as bell peppers; carrots and sugar snap peas and using white meat such as chicken which is less fatty than red meat such as beef. If the curry you enjoy is cream based, replace the cream with yogurt. You wont be able to tell the difference until you start to feel healthier.

Brown rice is always a unpopular substitute to boiled white rice with many people thinking it has a boring taste. However, you can create a great homemade pilau rice for less calories. Simply add some spices such as saffron and bay leaves to give it a more enhanced flavour. Lightly fry some mushrooms and onions in olive oil and mix them into the rice to create the perfect pilau rice.

Naan bread is always a must have with any curry and luckily it isnt calorific. Naan bread is available at any leading supermarket. Just put it in the oven for approximately fifteen minutes before you wish to eat for an Indian experience scarily close to the real thing.
